If you need VPN support via network manager you have to install one of the following packages: network-manager-openvpn network-manager-vpnc network-manager-openconnect. The network-manager-pptp plugin is installed by default. It's pretty simple just to run wicd and openvpn separately. I use wicd post connect scripts (man wicd-wireless-settings.conf) to start openvpn in the background with no issues. There're lots of great tutorials on how to use openvpn of you're not familiar! The main benefit I see to NetworkManager is that it has an OpenVPN plugin (so that one can connect to a VPN via NM and have it aware of it, maintain new DNS configuration, etc), which wicd does not have.
